Interior Designer in Gurugram: A Practical Guide to Planning Your Home Interiors
Moving into a new apartment or builder floor in Gurugram? Here is how to plan layouts, society approvals, materials, budget and timelines before you hire an interior designer.

IllustrativeGurugram has a mix of homes that need very different planning: high-rise apartments along Golf Course Extension Road, Dwarka Expressway and Sohna Road, builder floors in the older sectors, and independent houses. The questions you ask before hiring an interior designer are similar, but the answers change with the type of home you have.
This guide walks through the decisions that matter most, in the order they usually come up.
Start with how you live, not with a mood board
Pinterest boards are useful, but the best layouts come from daily routines. Before the first meeting, note down:
- Who lives in the home, and who cooks most often
- What needs storing: clothes, bedding, luggage, puja items, kitchen utensils, children's things
- Whether you work from home and need a proper desk
- Which rooms get strong afternoon sun, and where the AC units will sit
A good designer will ask these questions anyway. Having the answers ready makes the first site visit far more productive.
Measure the actual site before you design
Floor plans from the builder are a starting point, not a measurement. Columns, beams, window sills, shafts and AC ledges often differ from the drawing by a few inches, which is enough to break a wardrobe or kitchen layout. Insist on a proper site measurement before any design is finalised.
In new Gurugram apartments, also check what the builder has handed over. Some flats come with a basic kitchen platform and electrical points already fixed; others are closer to bare. Your design should work with what is already there, or the quotation should clearly include removing it.
Understand your society's rules early
Most societies have rules for interior work. Common ones include fixed working hours, no noisy work on Sundays, lift booking for material movement, registration of workers, and a refundable damage deposit. Ask the maintenance office for the rules in writing and share them with your designer before the schedule is made.
Choose materials for NCR conditions
Delhi NCR summers are hot and dusty, and the monsoon brings humidity. That affects material choices:
- Near sinks and bathrooms, use moisture-resistant boards such as BWP plywood rather than the cheapest option.
- For kitchens, matt or textured finishes hide fingerprints and are easier to clean than high gloss.
- For wardrobes, good hinges and drawer channels matter more than the shutter finish over the long run.
- For ceilings, plan AC positions and drain lines before the false ceiling goes up.
Our modular kitchen and wardrobe pages explain these options in more detail.
Budget with an itemised quotation
The fastest way to lose control of a budget is to compare lump-sum figures. Ask for a quotation that lists every item with its size, material, finish and hardware. Then you can decide where to spend more — for example on the kitchen and wardrobes you use every day — and where a simpler finish is perfectly fine.
Keep a contingency of around ten percent for changes you decide on during execution. Changes are normal; surprises in the final bill are not.
Plan the order of work
Interior work goes smoothly when trades follow the right sequence: civil changes and electrical conduits first, then false ceilings, then carpentry and installation, then painting and final cleaning. When this order is broken, finished work gets damaged and has to be redone.
How to compare interior designers
When you speak to different designers or firms, ask each of them:
- Will you measure the site yourself before quoting?
- Can I see an itemised quotation with materials and hardware named?
- Who supervises the site, and how often?
- What happens if I change something after approval?
- Can I see photographs of work you have actually completed?
The answers will tell you more than any brochure.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need society or RWA permission for interior work in Gurugram?
Most Gurugram societies require you to inform the maintenance office before work starts, and many ask for a written request, a refundable deposit, a list of workers and agreed working hours. Check your society's rules first so work is not stopped midway.
Should I finalise the design before buying furniture?
Yes. Fixed items like the kitchen, wardrobes, ceiling and electrical points decide where loose furniture can go. Finalising them first avoids buying a sofa or bed that does not fit the final layout.
What should an interior quotation include?
An itemised list of every unit or area, the quantity and unit (sq ft, running ft or numbers), the material and finish for each item, hardware details, the rate, taxes and the payment schedule. A single lump-sum figure makes comparison impossible.
